TYPES OF DENTAL X-RAYS

There are several types of dental x-rays. Each type of x-ray serves a unique purpose in diagnosing or assessing the various structures of the mouth. Dental x-rays fall under two categories: intraoral x-rays and extraoral x-rays.

Intraoral X-Rays

The most common type of dental x-rays that we use at Magnolia Family Dental Care full under the category of intraoral x-rays. This type of x-ray is taken inside the mouth. During this type of x-ray, we are able to look at several aspects of oral health including the following:

Check the bone structure surrounding the teeth
Find existing cavities

Extraoral X-Rays

Extraoral x-rays are the second category of dental x-rays. These are taken outside of the mouth and offer a different perspective than intraoral x-rays. While intraoral x-rays are used to look primarily at the teeth, extraoral x-rays are used mainly for viewing the jawbone and skull.

Extraoral x-rays are used to diagnose problems with the alignment of the jaw such as TMJ and to monitor the growth of the jaw. This type of dental x-ray is also valuable for identifying impacted teeth and even potential tumors. Extraoral x-rays aid greatly in the procedure for dental implants or necessary extractions.
